LG is planning to unveil its rollable phone in March next year, as per a report by The Elec. The company had teased the device at an event last month.
As per the report, the phone is codenamed “Project B” and will feature a screen that can be rolled around its side and back. It would be the second phone under LG’s Explorer project. The report also adds that the South Korean technology company is planning to launch its next flagship smartphone in Q1 2021. The LG flagship is rumoured to come powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 chipset.
The rumours about a rollable device by LG had started floating around when the company filed 10 applications with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) in 2019. The trademark applications don’t reveal much but the codenames of smartphones. The names that have been registered are The Roll, Double Roll, E Roll, Signature R, R Screen, R Canvas, Dual Roll, Roll Canvas, Bi-Roll and Rotolo.
This isn’t the first time LG is dabbling into rollable devices. The company already has a rollable TV and it had spoken about the idea of having rollable smartphones as well.
LG earlier also got a patent approved for a transparent foldable device. As per a report by The Verge, the transparent foldable display patent was filed in 2015 but got a nod of approval last year only. The patent was filed with the US Trademark and Patents Office (USPTO) and the images reveal a traditional foldable design with transparency being its differentiator from other foldable devices.
